5 starsTheresa, Iowa City, June 18, 2009

MJSCC(aka Brookland Woods) is a well-run, fun child care center. Aside from the very experienced (15 yrs+) directors, the center is staffed with energetic and responsible college students (both female AND male). Even though the children follow a set weekly and daily schedule, much of the day the kids are allowed to choose from a wide range of different creative and educational activities. They are also not segregated by age and play freely with kids from 2-5 yrs old. My older daughter (4 yr old) loves it and I can't wait for my younger one to join her!

MJSCCC is a unique childcare center located on the campus of The University of Iowa. In 1999 the center was re-named in honor of Mary Jo Small, upon her retirement from the University. During her career, Mrs. Small made significant contributions towards establishing existing funding for child care on campus. She also devoted herself tirelessly to issues of concern to women and children. We are proud to be part of her legacy. Our center accepts children, ages two through six, from families of students, staff, and faculty. Full and part time enrollment options are available. Please call the center for availability and rates.

The philosophy of the center is based on the premise that children learn through play. We believe it is our task to facilitate that play. Our program is intended to encourage and stimulate the many aspects of childhood development through open-ended, child-centered activities. These include reading, natural science, blocks, cars and trucks, building materials, dress up, imagination, art, creativity, games, puzzles, music, and movement. There are six program rooms in our well-maintained, two-story, wood frame house built in 1910.
